March 1st marks one of my favorite celebrations, Read Across America Day! This annual event was established by the National Education Association (NEA) to honor children’s author Dr. Seuss. By now you know I like to put my own twist on things, like I do on all the fairy tales I read. So I see this day as not only an opportunity for author’s like myself to read in schools (I’ll be at 2 schools in Los Angeles for the big event this year), but also to celebrate young author’s.
Last year I was very excited when I learned that one of my writing contest winners, Briana Beebe from Colorado, was one of the featured authors at her own school’s Read Across America program. It made me think about how we can celebrate a child’s story, not only on Read Across America Day, but any day of the year!
The following are a few simple suggestions for celebrating young authors and readers!
- Invite family members and friends for an author party: Host family members and friends so your child can share their story. Having a round of applause always makes for a big smile!
- Create a reading circle - to allow children the opportunity to read aloud and take turns reading aloud with family and friends.
- Join the celebration by reading for 30 minutes each day during the month of March!
- Find your local library and check out a new batch of books and let your child read them to you.
- Some other fun Seuss-gestions from the National Education Association website

And remember just like the title of one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books, - “Oh the Place’s You Will Go” - this is what will happen when we encourage and celebrate young authors and readers.
Enjoy my young author playlist. It features amazing young authors from my Be-A-Famous Writer Contest.
