March is filled with wonderful ways to spring into action with reading. Last week it kicked off with Read Across America, an annual event established by the National Education Association (NEA) to honor children’s author Dr. Seuss and also World Read Aloud Day, a Global Literacy Movement. We spring our clocks forward, so why not spring our reading activities forward too!
I am excited to say I read to multiple classrooms last week to be in the spirit of March Reading Month. In fact, I even held a live reading event to share the story "My Magic App" written by Ms. Ashley Alicea’s third-grade from Havelock, NC, who won my Be-a-Famous Writer contest . There is nothing like sharing the power of words from young authors.
I have added the video of "My Magic App" the Grand Prize winner of my fifth annual “Be a Famous Writer” contest to my Young Author Playlist. It includes beautiful illustrations from the talented Robin Robinson (who also has a new book just out called Wanda’s Wart
Read it forward by celebrating young authors and readers and celebrating the power of words! Here are a few suggestions of things you can do to encourage your young reader:
- Invite family members and friends for an author party: Host family members and friends so your child can share their story. Having a round of applause always makes for a big smile!
- Create a reading circle - to allow children the opportunity to read aloud and take turns reading aloud with family and friends.
- Join the celebration by reading for 30 minutes each day during the month of March!
- Find your local library and check out a new batch of books and let your child read them to you.
