March is the beginning of spring, and it offers lots of fun ways to spring into action with reading. There’s Read Across America, an annual event established by the National Education Association (NEA) to honor children’s author Dr. Seuss. World Read Aloud Day, a Global Literacy Movement, is also in March. We spring our clocks forward, so why not spring our kids into action, too!
And what better way to celebrate literacy than by sharing the words of talented young authors? I’ve added the video of "The Magic Baseball Poster," the Grand Prize Winner of my 6th-annual “Be a Famous Writer” contest, to my Young Author Playlist. It includes beautiful and original new illustrations from the gifted artist Robin Robinson.
So let’s all Read it Forward by honoring young authors and readers and the power of words!
Here are a few suggestions for things you can do to encourage your own young readers:
- Join the celebration by reading to your child for 20 minutes each day during the month of March.
- Go to your local library, check out a few books and ask your child to read them to you.
- Connect readers with Mackin's new "I Want To Read" website, hosting an astounding array of helpful resources:
My good friend Shannon McClintock Miller also did a great blog post about the program.
Of course, March is the beginning of spring, and students are hitting their stride. But before we know it, summer arrives, and even the most dedicated kids can lose their momentum. Teachers can help prevent the “summer slide” by getting their students involved in a summer reading program. Mackin, a great supporter of literacy and one of the new sponsors of my writing contest, has everything you need:
